Participation

All who join us are encouraged to add their voices in worship. Congregational music is chosen carefully to give each gathering a variety of musical, spiritual and theological expressions; and to teach, to unite and to inspire. Music-making by the assembly is the primary mission of Epiphany’s music ministries.

Our choirs provide three main functions in worship.
1)  to assist the people in raising their own voices in song.
2)  to enrich the praises of the people, in musical language which excels in beauty but exceeds the skills of the average worshiper
3)  to provide an outlet of prayer and praise for trained singers who want to share their skills and talents with God and their fellow worshipers.

Holy Listening
Epiphany’s choirs and instrumentalists do not exist to supplant the people’s musical participation, but to expand and enrich it. The choral and instrumental offerings of our trained musicians are intended to give the listener an opportunity to experience the movement of the Spirit in the offerings of others on behalf of the gathering.

The Epiphany Choir
The Epiphany Choir is a 15-20-voice ensemble composed of volunteer singers from the congregation and the community, and several professional section leaders.

The Epiphany Choir’s season extends from September through the Feast of Pentecost in the spring. The Epiphany Choir sings at the weekly 11 AM Sunday liturgy and for services on Christmas Eve and Ash Wednesday, and during Holy Week. The Epiphany Choir sings a popular annual Christmas Benefit Concert on the Tuesday Concert Series, and has recently joined other choirs in singing for diocesan events at the National Cathedral.

The Epiphany Choir’s repertoire encompasses a wide variety of styles, including motets by the master composers, arrangements of folk tunes and spirituals, and anthems by composers carrying on the tradition of Anglican church music in the present day.  Regular rehearsals are on Thursday evenings from 7:15 to 9:15.  New members are always welcome.  Individuals interested in joining the Epiphany Choir are encouraged to contact Dr. Jeremy Filsell, Director of Music Ministries, jfilsell@epiphanydc.org or by telephone at 202-347-2635 x18.

During the summer season, the Director of Music Ministries convenes a summer “pick-up choir” on Sunday mornings when enough singers are available to form a well-balanced ensemble.

The Welcome Table Choir
The Welcome Table Choir is composed of a diverse group of Welcome Table participants, parishioners and street musicians, and inspires the worshipers at our Sunday 8 AM Welcome Table Eucharist with their performances and spirited leadership of congregational singing.  Since first convened in the fall of 2007, this dedicated group has been growing and expanding their mission rapidly.  In the spring of 2008, they gave their first outside performance at Samaritan Ministry of Greater Washington’s Next Step Breakfast, and have performed at other events beyond Epiphany’s walls in the years since, supporting causes that directly impact the members’ lives and those of their friends and family.  Singing and performing in a variety of musical styles, but especially spirituals and gospel songs, the Welcome Table Choir brings joy and inspiration to their listeners, and give voice to the joys and struggles in their lives and ours.

The Welcome Table Choir is an all-volunteer ensemble, including its leadership. They sing every Sunday throughout the year (with rare exception), and meet to rehearse and plan their music both before and after each Sunday’s 8 AM Welcome Table Eucharist and Breakfast. New members are always welcome. The current leaders of the Welcome Table Choir are conductor Peate Pegues and pianist Bob Wallin. If you are interested in learning about these opportunities, please contact the parish office at 202-347-2635.
