Lenten Quiet Day

Exploring Our Dying: Opening More Fully to Life
"...I have set before you life and death...choose life..." (Deut. 30:19)

A Lenten Quiet Day at Epiphany
Saturday, March 3
9:30pm – 2:30pm (coffee, breads, and gathering time at 9am)

$20 includes lunch and morning refreshments

In this quiet day we will explore how prayerfully facing into life's losses, diminishment, and the reality of our ultimate dying can open us to living a fuller, more compassionate life. Through experiential exercises and using examples from scripture and contemporary authors, we will pray and reflect on what we might need to live with greater courage, freedom, and hope. Participants will have opportunities for silence, solitude, and optional sharing in small groups. Participants are encouraged to bring a journal or notebook in which to write.

This quiet day will be led by Bill Dietrich, a longtime spiritual director and retreat leader. For over 20 years he has served in various capacities with the Shalem Institute for Spiritual Formation in Washington, DC. including as Shalem's Executive Director until retiring in 2009. He teaches in Shalem's Spiritual Guidance Program and leads retreats and workshops in spiritual formation for various faith communities and organizations. Bill currently devotes much of his time and energies to end-of-life issues. He is co-director of Companioning the Dying: Opening Fully to Living, a program for hospice workers and others who are called to accompany the dying in their final journeys. He is an active volunteer with Montgomery Hospice and serves as a chaplain intern at the Hebrew Home of Greater Washington. Bill is a member of Bethesda Friends Meeting (Quakers).
