This Sunday, May 11, is the Day of Pentecost.  We will celebrate with a Festival Pentecost Eucharist at 11am. The liturgy will include the blessing of a child, sending forth our seminarians, and the commissioning of parishioners

The readings assigned for Pentecost Day are: Acts 2:1-21, Psalm 104:25-35, 37b, 1 Corinthians 12:3b-13, and the Gospel of John 20:19-23.  Our preacher at 8am and 11am is the Rev. Randolph Charles.

There is exciting news about out music this Sunday.  The Epiphany Choir will be joined by an eleven-piece orchestra (strings, oboes, flutes, bassoon, trumpets & organ!) for a performance of Johann Sebastian Bach’s exciting and ravishing Pentecost Cantata 34, “O ewiges Feuer, o Ursprung der Liebe”.  Bassoonist Ibby Roberts and Music Director Christian Clough will perform Gabriel Fauré’s Sicilienne, Op. 78 from his incidental music for Pélleas et Mélisande, using the Shinkman Steinway piano, in honor of Buck Shinkman, Epiphany parishioner and choir member, who died this past Monday.  Festive processions, hymns and service music for congregation, choir, organ and orchestra will complete the musical celebration during our Whitsunday celebrations.  Please come to pray, sing, and praise God with us this Sunday!  And, bring a friend with you.  The day will be full of celebration and end with a picnic.  Here are details:

Everyone is encouraged to wear something red, as a way to signify the Holy Spirit among us.   And, you can also wear clothing that typifies your native country.

Plan to stay after church for our annual Pentecost Picnic in the garden.  We will provide the hamburgers and hot dogs. Please join the feast by bringing a dish.  If your last name begins with these letters : A-D: Salads; E-M: Desserts; and N-Z: Vegetables or Side Dishes.

Godly Play, for children four to twelve, is takes place in the Godly Play Room on the second floor of the Parish House.  Uchenna Alexander will be facilitating Godly Play.  Karina Vassallo, Epiphany's Nursery Caregiver will be in the nursery to care for infants and young children.

New Parish Directories are available on the piano in the Parish Hall.  Please take a copy so you can stay in touch with fellow parishioners!

Copies of Forward Day by Day for May -- July are available in the rack outside the Willard Room.  The cost is 50¢ for the small booklets and $1.00 for the large print editions and can be left in the offering plate.

Have you wanted to wear one of those distinctive navy T-shirts with the Welcome Table logo?  A new shipment has been received for those who volunteer monthly.  Sign up to volunteer and we'll make sure you receive a shirt - quantities are limited; don't delay!  Welcome Table volunteers are needed to help carry out the outreach mission of The Church of the Epiphany.  Each week 200 working poor and homeless people are served a nourishing breakfast in an atmosphere of care and respect.  Volunteers are needed to help cook, serve, set up, pour coffee, sign in, greet and clear up.  If there is one of these tasks you would enjoy, join the team! Call Susan Weinbeck (703-522-2862), Horace Kirby (Welcome Table Coordinator), or Randolph.  Come to The Welcome Table to see for yourself.  Serving begins at 8:45 following 8 o'clock Eucharist.

Join the OPALS (Older Persons with Active Lifestyles) for a docent-led tour at the Reynolds Center of the Smithsonian American Art Museum on Sunday, May 18, 1:00pm - Color as Field: American Painting, 1950-1975.  This landmark exhibition examines the sources, meaning, and impact of the Color Field movement. Color Field painting emerged in the United States in the 1950s and is characterized by pouring, staining, spraying, or painting thinned paint onto raw canvas to create vast chromatic expanses.  Contact Larry Ellis, or sign-up at coffee hour.

Your Credit Is Good at Epiphany. Since September, Epiphany has been able to process credit card payments for pledges, donations, payments, and tickets to events through its web site at www.epiphanydc.org.  Click on the link from the main page to go directly to a secure web site.  The first part of the form asks for your contact information.  Next, you have an opportunity to specify whether you wish to make a donation, pledge, or purchase tickets for an upcoming event.  The rest of the form changes according to your selection at this point.  If you have ever bought something online, the experience will be very familiar to you - fill out your credit card information and submit.  You will receive an automatically generated email confirming the transaction.  You also have the option to pay by electronic transfer from your own bank or other account - follow the on-screen instructions.

Invite a friend to church.  Here’s a surprising statistic – the average Episcopalian invites someone to church once every 27 years.  Each of us can act to change that statistic by inviting a friend or colleague to Epiphany.  Think about what you receive from worship and fellowship at this parish, and offer that to someone who might be seeking a place and community to belong.

Remember to collect travel-size toiletries (except mouthwash) when you travel and to save those detergent samples that arrive in the mail. Our Welcome Table guests are always grateful to receive them.  Encourage your co-workers who travel to contribute as well.  There is a box on the stage where you can put your toiletries on Sunday.  During the week they can be brought to the office.

Wear your nametag!  If you need a nametag, please print your name on the Nametag Sheet located on the Nametag Rack in the parish hall.

If you have four hours available one Wednesday a month, you can volunteer in the parish office!  Duties include being a friendly greeter to all who come to the office window, answering the phone, making copies, letting people in to attend meetings, and providing office coverage during parish staff meetings.  Please call Mary Dail, the Parish Administrator at 202-347-2635, ext. 11 or send an email to mdail=@epiphanydc.org if you would like to help out or if you want more information.

Have it your way!  Epiphany has begun sending the Parish Guide newsletter to those persons for whom we have email addresses.  We will also continue to send the Guide as a hard-paper copy to anyone without an email and to anyone who prefers the “hands-on” version.  It’s your choice.  Please let us know if you want to receive your Guide through the postal mail service, and we will gladly respond.  Use the sign up sheet at coffee hour, or email Mary Dail at mdail=@epiphanydc.org.

Why do we insert an equals sign in email addresses? We're trying to cut down on the quantity of spam coming to church email addresses. Spammers scan web pages for email addresses; please let us know how this works!

Life in the Epiphany Community

Go to www.edow.org now and read about Epiphany! There is a link to the New York Times story on Street Church. There is also a photo of Diana Butler Bass at Diocesan Convention, where she preached at the Friday Eucharist and gave an excellent keynote teaching at the Saturday morning session. For more information on Diana and her ministry, go to www.dianabutlerbass.com.God is at work at through Epiphany people as we try to be true to both our outward journey of mission and our inward journey of prayer.

Join the Epiphany Choir this year! The Epiphany Choir is always happy to welcome new members, especially at the beginning of the season. Whatever your previous musical experience or your musical abilities, we invite you to consider joining the choir. Rehearsals are normally held 7:15 – 9:15 PM in the church on Thursdays. We enjoy making music together, supporting the Epiphany community in worship, praising God through music, and sharing our lives with each other. The choir rehearses Sunday mornings at 10 AM for the 11 AM liturgy, and sings at several other events throughout the year. You are welcome to attend rehearsals, with no obligation to join, to see if singing with us would be a good fit for you. Christian Clough, Director of Music Ministries, and any number of our current choir members would be happy to talk with you about the rewards and responsibilities that are part of singing in the choir. Please speak with one of us after church, or contact Christian at cclough@epiphanydc.org or 202.347.2635 x18.
